Teams are magical. Organizations win when team wins.
Yet, it’s sad how less we work on building teams with shared meaning.
And working in teams is not easy. Not at all.
There is a constant hustle between tight deadlines, diverse personalities, personal biases, and clarity of direction.
Building High Performance Teams is not an accident. It’s a deliberate, concentrated, and consistent effort.
Here’s my letter to teams… your teams, my team! I hope you find it worth enough to print it and post it at your workplaces…
- If you make a promise, set a date. If you can’t set a date, don’t promise.
- When you set a date, meet it. Treat it as a religious obligation!
- Hope is not a strategy.
- Clean up your own mess. And if possible, clean up your colleagues’ messes. It’s pays off later for sure.
- Communicate. Overcommunicate. And remember, it’s never too much!
- Question courageously and gracefully. Question the strategy. Question the perspective.
- Never… NEVER question someone’s intent. It’s disgraceful and criminal.
- Be open to abstracts. Be open to imaginations. Reality is not as big as possibilities.
- Big projects are as important as small projects. Both demands equal character and ethics.
- Make mistakes, joyfully own them, fix them, share the learning… and be kind to others when they do the same.
- Help someone on the team get better.
- Care more, enjoy more, share more.
- Say “sorry”, “thank you”, “how can I help you?”, “can you please help me”.
- Talk to everyone as if they are the most important person alive. Don’t customize the respect you give to others.
