The “8-Hour Day” Nonsense

Well… the early 20th century industrial complex needed semi-programable robots [read humans] to work in shifts [8 hours, 3 shifts], for optimum production.

The tragedy is that the 21st century organizations are opting to hold the 8-hour hustle as if it was a religious revelation.

This is insane. Plain Stupid.

Covid-19 pushed us [and slapped on our faces] to revisit workday and gave us a crash course into limitless possibilities and global access… but!!!

I sadly see organizations desperately waiting to get back to normal. The same inhuman 8-hour normal.

And because of this 8-hour, [your ass on the chair, time-in, time-out punch, don’t dare to live like human from 9–5 mindset,] we are making our organizations ugly. We are making it least attractive for future workforce. A workforce that believes in quality of life and value of relevant contribution.

It’s still not too late.

Host focus group discussions… engage your leaders and front liners… get experts on board, and see how you can reimagine and reorganize your organization to get out of this 8-hours rut.

This 8-hour must change as a metric for a productive “workday.” It’s a shame when even today, people are proud to have exceeded their normal 8-hour time bar at work.

As an organization, we must ask this…

How are we defining success? Is it about measuring how much time our employees spend at work… or by how much they accomplish?

Future is amazing! Are we prepared to embrace it…
