The bad boss barrier

Hey… have you heard someone saying…

I’m doing this worthless/directionless/meaningless/inhuman work because that’s what the boss wants.”

By the way… you might have said it yourself! Perhaps.

There are many alterations of this. But the pain is same.

And it’s everywhere…

A doctor is following a protocol because hospital management wants it that way… An officer is delaying process because the higher ups want it that way. You can see the customer pain, but your boss targets are more important for your survival on job. A teacher is blaming the curriculum for boring classroom experience.

It’s everywhere. It’s trap and it’s real.

Fine.

But where is the choice. How we deal with it determines whether we will excel or fail. It decides if we will be remarkable or invisible. To be honest, if everyone in the world had the right boss, amazing work would have not been that scarce.

As professionals [not as an employee, but as a professional], part of our job is to educate our bosses to keep them from doing something stupid, selfish, short-term and sluggish work. And it’s not easy. Anything worthwhile is not easy. It’s a daily hustle. And you only do it when you are doing work that matters.

So the idea is to help yourself move from this conversation:

“I couldn’t do it because of my boss”

to

“I was able to do it despite my boss”

or even better

“We did it”.

Here are 2 secrets to do meaningful work:

  1. Engage with your boss to let you do meaningful work.
  2. Sign up for a better boss.

It’s a daily hustle.

Top secret: You get better boss as soon as you decide to be a professional who does meaningful work.
