Work from Home… The other side of the picture

Work from home…

A phrase that suddenly got popular.

A phrase that became social proof of agile organization.

A phrase that gave new meaning to work life balance.

Let’s examine it closely. Work + from + Home.

Work & Home: Home — that provided refuge to work for many.

We have known Work and Home catering 2 different mindsets.

Home is safe, work brings stretch and tension. Home is long-term, work might not be. Home is about control (mostly), work is about compliance (almost always). Home is about taking responsibility (in most cases) and work is about keeping your head down, avoiding responsibility and look busy (sadly).

Work from Home is not a natural shift.

And it’s certainly not going to work if “compliance + show up only when it’s necessary” mindset prevails.

It needs a new posture.

With all the time saved by not getting completely ready, commuting to and from office and attending meetings, you can create wonders. It’s a massive opportunity.

It’s an opportunity to plan your own agenda, organize your peers, make bigger efforts, show up more often, lead courageously, connect generously, innovate passionately and ask hard questions. And then do it all again.

It’s an opportunity.

I know — it’s very difficult to come out of the luxury of being a compliant cog in the system, who takes no blame, find others to shame and be a spectator in a game.

But I also know — there is a great opportunity in showing up, doing more, and making a difference.

From wherever you’re working.

Work well.
