You are doing your job… But are you doing the work that matters?

Here’s a catch: doing your job might not be the same as doing the work that matters.

The technical tasks are important. Compliance to job description is mandatory. but work includes much more than that.

A doctor curing patient and following all SOPs is doing a good job… but a doctor contributing to academic circles & research community, using compassion to heal, investing in staff and developing people, engaging with other professionals to expand horizon is surely doing the work that matters.

A software engineer will do a good job if the code is done right.

A consultant will do a good job is she provides the client with the solution that was expected out of her.

A waiter/server will do a good job if her serves you the food, with precision.

… but there’s more to the work than what’s in the typical job description

Job is surely about the hard skills. But to do the work that matters, we need Essential Skills.

Remember — your job is simply the ticket you buy for the honor of doing the other part — the work that matters.
